Take a tour through Redondo Beach's complex past as it reveals itself through a number of historical periods. Deeply ingrained Native American ancestry from before 1784 helped to shape this area, which finally became a part of the vast Rancho San Pedro land grant.
With the opening of the Hotel Redondo in 1890, Redondo Beach's grandeur came to the forefront. This signaled the city's rise to prominence as a travel destination, drawing tourists through steamships, railroads, and a thriving oil and lumber trade. The piers in Redondo emerged as the primary port for Los Angeles County, receiving steamships from the Pacific Steamship Company on a weekly basis.
Travelers from far and wide were drawn to the Hotel Redondo, the pinnacle of luxury with its 225 sun-drenched rooms and 18-hole golf course. Tent City provided wooden floors and electric lights in their $3.00 per week or $10.00 per month tents for rent, for those looking for more economical lodging.
Redondo's landscape is dotted with both man-made and natural wonders, such as the fragrant Carnation Gardens and the gemstone-filled Moonstone Beach. The city's fame grew to such an extent that on April 18, 1892, it was formally incorporated.
But in 1899, with the construction of San Pedro Harbor, things began to shift, and Redondo's stature began to wane. The legendary Hotel Redondo suffered a blow from Prohibition, closing its doors in 1925 and bringing an end to an era.
With the building of the first breakwater in 1939 and the development of King Harbor in 1956—named for Representative Cecil R. King—the city was able to withstand both literal and metaphorical storms. In the 1950s and 1960s, Redondo saw a surge in population that turned the seaside resort town into a bustling neighborhood.
Redondo Beach is a monument to its long history and development today. The city is home to cutting-edge educational institutions, thriving commercial districts, and first-rate municipal services amid its piers, saltwater lagoon, and gourmet restaurants. Come explore Redondo Beach's dynamic past and present—a city that skillfully combines progress and nostalgia.
