Manhattan Beach is not a place that just happened; its history, however short, has interesting origins. Originally, the region was included inside Rancho Sausal Redondo, which is ten miles of shoreline and means "Round Clump of Willows." Peck frequently referred to his holdings as "North Manhattan Beach" or "Peck's Manhattan Beach Tract," according to historical sources.
When John Merrill and his partners purchased property that was originally intended for Potencia Beach in 1901, Manhattan Beach saw its first major alteration. Inspired by the success of an upscale beach hotel resort on Coney Island, New York, known as Manhattan Beach, their goal was to build a new resort town.
The first building in downtown was constructed by John Merrill in 1901. It was a simple frame building that was later converted into city offices. On December 7, 1912, Manhattan Beach was formally incorporated. Manhattan Avenue's planks were arranged for driving traffic, and pedestrian circulation was paved on the Strand and nearby streets.
The first pier was built by the Los Angeles Ocean Power Company at the base of Center Street in 1897 or 1898. It was supported by iron pilings and had a wave motor that drove the Strand lighting system. Regretfully, a 30-foot section of the pier and associated apparatus were destroyed by a storm in 1899. To reduce exposure and wave-induced damage, Engineer A.L. Harris developed a later pier with a circular end.
With the exception of the Roundhouse, which was finished in 1922, the pier was completed on July 5, 1920, and reached about 922 feet into the ocean.
Due to its allure for year-round living, Manhattan Beach had a significant increase in population after World War II. The South Bay saw a surge in population due to the rise of the defense sector and the return of servicemen. As the need for housing and employment prospects in the area expanded, land east of Sepulveda was developed.
